BECHTELSVILLE, PA MAY 4, 2003 . . . . The 14th season of the NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series opened on Sunday night at the Grandview Speedway. Dan Kaszubinski of Syracuse, NY collected the $3,000 for the victory in the 2nd Annual Sprint Challenge Championship sponsored by TEAM Welsh Jeep/Chrysler of Far Hills, NJ. In the 20 lap ARDC wingless midget feature, Ray Bull of Bloomsburg, PA was the victor, scoring his second consecutive ARDC win of the season. The sprint event was co-sanctioned by both the URC and ESS sprint car organizations and ironically, Kaszubinski is on the ESS driver roster and on this night, was driving a URC sprint car. Kaszubinski was driving the Elmer Stoltzfus sprinter previously driven by the injured Gary Gollub. A field of fifty-two sprint cars turned out for the program. Six heat races were presented and they all went non-stop with victories going to Midge Miller, Glen Clarke, Dan Kaszubinski, Jeff VanDusen, Pete Green and Kevin Welsh. Two "C" Main events were necessary as Justin Barger and Ryan Coniam shared the victories. ESS driver Lance Yonge was the winner of the "B" Main event. The 30 lap Sprint Challenge Championship was a thriller. The first nine laps went non-stop as Midge Miller set the pace over Glen Clarke and Jeff VanDusen. On lap ten, VanDusen spun collecting George Suprick and URC point leader Dave Ely.. On the restart, Miller was quick to set the pace as Pete Green was in the hunt. As the field crossed at the halfway mark, Miller was still on top followed by Green, Mike Haggenbottom, Kaszubinski and Doug Emery. On lap eighteen the caution was displayed for Jason Clauss who stopped in turn three. On the restart, Green was the quickest and took the lead in a three abreast run for the top spot, dropping Miller to second with Haggenbottom third, Kaszubinski fourth and Trevor Lewis now in fifth. Green was running a flawless race until mechanical problems sidelined him from action on lap twenty-one. Miller was again the pace setter but now had to contend with Kaszubinski who was closing quickly. With just five laps to go, Kaszubinski took the lead with Miller in second as Haggenbottom, Lewis and Kevin Welsh followed in the top five. In the closing stages of the race Haggenbottom and Lewis slipped by Miller and this duo was now in a battle for second and trying to chase down the leader. As the checker flag fell, Dan Kaszubinski darted under the black and white to claim the win. Mike Haggenbottom finished second followed by Trevor Lewis, Midge Miller and Kevin Welsh. The ARDC Midgets drew an impressive field of twenty-six wingless midgets. Heat race winner include Randy Mausteller, Bryan Kobylarz and Ray Bull. During the running of the qualifying events, Marc Dailey and Ed Stimley Jr. took spectacular flips in two different accidents. Both drivers were transported to the hospital for a check-up. In the 20 lap ARDC midget feature, Chris Morway was the leader for the first six laps with Ray Bull taking the lead on lap seven. Bull made a flawless run from his mid-pack starting position to turn in a beautiful drive in a wingless midget. Ray Bull took the win over Scott Lawrence, Don Trent, Fred Schell and Bryan Kobylarz. |
